He phoned Aunt Hazel Ann four times on his way back to Hoboken. Although the backs of his legs were a little sore from getting gang-banged, he felt more lighthearted that afternoon than he’d felt in years. He’d made more money in tips that weekend than he’d anticipated, and the owner of the club liked him so much he came up to him personally at the end of the brunch performance to make sure he’d see him the following weekend. Each time Rory phoned Aunt Hazel Ann, it went to voice mail and a recording said she hadn’t activated her voice mail account yet. He couldn’t call a land line because she didn’t have one. He’d talked her into getting a cell phone by explaining it wasn’t as expensive as she thought it was. And when she figured out he was right, she canceled her land line and she it was a waste of money for one person to have two phones. He agreed—for the most part. But at least she’d had an answering machine with the land line. Now she’d never get his messages in case of an emergency.

She always answered that phone. She carried it with her everywhere. So he drove a little faster, wondering why she wasn’t answering. He started to imagine all kinds of horrible things. Dane had been kidnapped by one of those child stalkers. Or Aunt Hazel Ann’s apartment had been robbed and they were both lying bruised and beaten on the living room floor. Rory tended to do this when he felt guilty about something. And he still felt guilty about letting four men take turns on him. He felt even worse about sleeping with a married man, mainly because his husbands had always fooled around on him and he knew how that felt. Now he would get punished for what he’d done, and someone he loved would have to pay the price for his mistakes.
